Type(s) of Essential(s):
Social & Emotional Growth
Design
Prerequisite:
Option 1: Game Idea and Prototype Pitch
Option 2: Game Review PitchOverview
Educators review pitch essentials with learners.
Essentials in the Activity
Learners become familiar with the content needed to deliver their game pitch. For both types of pitches (prototype and review), learners apply their knowledge about the Transformational Design Framework. For the game prototype pitches, learners work with peers to clearly state to an audience their game, its value, components of the game and gameplay, how the game’s activities changed the player, and next steps for the game’s development. The groups’ prototype complements this presentation, giving an example of art, user interface, and/or gameplay experience. Because learners are working with peers to develop this pitch, they utilize relationship and collaboration skills and self and social awareness. For game review pitches, learners review a game they recommend a certain audience play (e.g., peers, teachers, designers). Learners describe the game, how it changes the players, and use eight categories that articulate the reasons a person should play the game. For both pitches, learners ascertain different mode options for conveying information as long as they address the questions and implement responsible decision-making skills.
Goals and Outcomes
Goal: Learners become knowledgeable about the specific components to include in their pitch.
Outcomes: Learners enhance their communication skills and knowledge of the design process as they identify components required to design and present their game pitch.
Materials
There are two pitch options for learners.
Option 1: Game Idea and Prototype Pitch
Game Idea and Prototype Game Idea and Prototype Pitch Fundamentals Sheet. If printed, include a writing instrument.
Option 2: Game Review Pitch
Game Review Pitch Fundamentals sheet. If printed, include a writing instrument.
Preparation
Complete prerequisites.
Option 1: Game Idea and Prototype Pitch
Duplicates of Game Idea and Prototype Pitch Fundamentals sheet (enough for each learner).
Option 2: Game Review Pitch
Duplicates of Game Review Pitch Fundamentals Sheet
Implementation and Completion
Ask learners to group with their partner(s) and distribute copies of the Pitch Fundamentals sheet based on the type of pitch learners will deliver, Game Idea and Prototype or Game Review. For the Game Review pitch, learners may have the option to work individually.
Discuss each point on the document, and address learners' questions about the pitch.
